Trivia & production notes
- Scott Derrickson left the director's chair in January 2020 due to creative differences, having conceived a story that diverged from Marvel's vision before even writing a screenplay draft.
- Sam Raimi initially hesitated to direct another Marvel film after the mixed reception to Spider-Man 3, but took the job partly because he was a fan of the Doctor Strange character.
- Michael Waldron had only three weeks to write a new script draft when he took over as screenwriter, a task he described as almost impossible.
- The COVID-19 pandemic forced a delay in filming from May 2020 to November 2021, which actually relieved Sam Raimi and Michael Waldron by giving them time to write the script from scratch rather than rushing into production.
- Screenwriter Jade Halley Bartlett was provided with a binder containing every Doctor Strange comic book ever printed to reference while developing the screenplay.
- Kevin Feige stated the multiverse concept would crack MCU storytelling open in a way that would have repercussions across Disney+ series and Phase Four films.
- America Chavez was included in the film because Marvel Studios had been searching for a way to incorporate the character into an MCU project, with her multiverse-related powers making her a fit for this story.
- America Chavez co-creator Joe Casey rejected a compensation offer from Marvel Comics that he considered a pittance and received no payment for the character's appearance in the film.
- Scott Derrickson's desire to make the first scary MCU film led to comparisons to adventure-horror films like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Poltergeist rather than full horror movies.
- Michael Waldron drew on his experience writing Rick and Morty to help introduce complex science fiction concepts in ways that would be digestible to audiences without overwhelming them with exposition.
