Trivia & production notes
- Matthew Vaughn originally envisioned Days of Future Past as the third film in the First Class trilogy, preceded by a young Wolverine movie set in the 1970s, but Fox accelerated the project and made it the second installment instead.
- Matthew Vaughn pitched opening the film with the Kennedy assassination, revealing that the magic bullet was controlled by Magneto, but this concept was not used.
- Bryan Singer developed a specific philosophy and set of rules for time travel in the film to make the story as plausible as possible.
- Screenwriter Simon Kinberg studied Back to the Future, The Terminator, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day in preparation for writing the film's time travel narrative.
- Wolverine was chosen as the character to travel through time instead of the original comic book character Kitty Pryde because his ageless appearance and rapid healing made the concept more believable.
- Rachel Summers was featured as the time traveler in the first draft of the script, but Kitty Pryde replaced her, with the script giving Kitty a new secondary power to send consciousnesses into the past.
- Characters considered but not used in the final film include Bishop, Cable, Angel Salvadore, Juggernaut, Jubilee, Nightcrawler, and Psylocke.
- Bryan Singer used Twitter as his primary method for announcing cast members, stating it allowed him to connect with fans and confirm casting before rumors spread.
- The film brought together actors from both the original X-Men trilogy and the First Class prequel, including Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen reprising their older character versions alongside younger actors from the earlier films.
- The Days of Future Past storyline originated in Marvel Comics issues 141-142 of The Uncanny X-Men, published in 1981, depicting a dystopian future where mutants are held in internment camps.
